My Birthday Celebration at the Black Wine and Food Experience

Last night was so dope! I want to tell you all about it. Chris and I usually go to dinner on my birthday but this year I wanted to do something different but still centered around food. The event was hosted by Chef Mimi, the creator of “Bringing it to the Table” and Coalition of Black Excellence. It was at Oakstop (274 14st, Oakland) which is a three story co-working event space with built in kitchens, a bar, beautiful outdoor areas, balconies, and bright large open spaces. I believe I counted 6 rooms. They had Black vintners, P. Harrell Wines and McBride Sisters pouring a “Black Girl Magic” Riesling.

Each room had something different in it with art flowing throughout. Music playing from Too Short to Miles Davis. It was amazing. One room had shrimp and grits, a herb polenta cake with creole essence which was to die for. I went back over and over with absolutely no shame. Another room had garlic noodles, fried chicken wings, and a spinach salad made by Chef Mimi. That food was delicious! It was hot, well seasoned and delectable. This was by far my favorite room! Also inside this room, they poured Moet and Hennessy VSOP cocktails. This is officially MY drink. I’m calling it “The Libra”.  There was an art piece called “Colorfully Melaninated” that was a silhouette of a man and woman created with puzzle pieces. I stared at it for quite some time. There were also desserts from peach cobbler bread pudding to vegan ice cream. African dancers performed and I can not forget to mention the open bar.

The event had just the right amount of people. Bustling in the popular areas but quiet in others so you could steal a private moment with your partner or chat with friends. The attendees were dressed to impress! Oakland looked stunning! Beautiful people everywhere dripping in MELANIN. We watched the chef competition featuring Chef Leilani, Chef Chauncy, Chef Tirzah Love and Chef Lamont from outside near a beautiful bamboo and succulent garden. The next event Chef Mimi and/or Coalition for Black Excellence creates, I will attend and tell everyone to do the same. This is exactly what I wanted for my birthday.
